  1. 1460-1526. Portuguese explorer. He set sail
  2. from Lisbon for the East Indies Mar 1500, and
  3. accidentally reached Brazil by taking a
  4. course too far W. He claimed the country for
  5. Portugal 25 Apr, as Spain had not followed up
  6. Vicente Pinzon's (c. 1460-1523) landing there
  7. earlier in the year. Continuing around
  8. Africa, he lost seven of his fleet of 13
  9. ships (the explorer Bartolomeu Diaz being one
  10. of those drowned), and landed in Mozambique.
  11. Proceeding to India, he negotiated the first
  12. Indo-Portuguese treaties for trade, and
  13. returned to Lisbon July 1501.
